Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus Altissimo) is a tree native to northeast and central China as well as Taiwan. It was introduced and widely naturalized in North America during much of the 19th century, and is now considered an invasive species due to its fast growth and tendency to crowd out other native tree species. The City of Portland is diligent in cutting these trees down whenever they are spotted, and I always try to get my hands on as much of the wood as possible. Lumber from the Tree of Heaven has a beautiful open grain, and ranges in color from a pale yellow to dark gray with streaks of black.

This bowl is made from wood that I cut, milled, and dried myself. It is six inches in diameter at the lip, and around two and a quarter inches tall. The bowl has been finished with a blend of tung-oil and local beeswax, it is safe for food contact and can be used in the kitchen, or as a catch-all for your keys, wallet, change, etc.

All of my pieces are made to an heirloom standard and are meant to be enjoyed for generations to come.
